This weekend I finally got my Valentine’s Day gift from Matt. Well, technically, I was finally able to redeem it. He had gotten us tickets to see Snow Patrol at the Aragon Ballroom.
The Aragon Ballroom is one of my favorite concert venues in Chicago. Built in 1926, the interior of the building was designed to replicate a Spanish palace courtyard. Fun fact: Aragon is an autonomous community of 3 provinces in Spain.
Over the years a host of talented entertainers have graced the stage. Acts like Frank Sinatra, Griff Williams, and Tommy Dorsey to name a few. There were a few interesting years after folks’ dancing shoes were laid to rest in the mid 50’s when the Aragon tried its stints as a skating rink, boxing rings, and even a nightclub. It wasn’t until the early 70’s that new ownership came in and reopened the venue as a rock and roll concert hall.
Since I started going to concerts in high school, I’ve been to the Aragon Ballroom four times. The rundown of shows includes, the All-American Rejects, Fall Out Boy, Block Party and now, Snow Patrol.
The five-member piece band hailing from Ireland and Scotland totally delivered on a phenomenal show. Right from the start I knew we were in for a treat. After taking the stage to Franz Ferdinand’s “Take Me Out”, the band announced they were filming the concert for their first ever DVD. So I might be on a DVD one day…pretty nifty!
Gary, the lead singer was a riot and knew how to work the crowd. Singing along was definitely encouraged and was frequently led by Gary. One of my favorite moments during the evening came when he decided to play guys versus girls. Let’s just say the girls won because the guys vocal performance was a little frightening.
The lights and media complemented an extensive play list. A few of my favorites that were played included Chasing Cars, Just Say Yes, and Crack the Shutters. Snow Patrol also incorporated a few new songs off of their recently released album, Fallen Empires. Topping off the evening, during the encore, the band filmed the video for their next single. Needless to say, I can’t wait to see it!
