Last week was Beer Under Glass at the Garfield Conservatory. We had a much smaller group this year and we were much colder than usual, but we had a great time nonetheless. We were cold because the event was held completely outside this year and the Chicago weather decided to be a pain in the butt! Even though it’s the middle of May, it was only about 40 degrees. Luckily we were smart enough to wear coats…I just wished I had brought my gloves too.
The beer helped me forget about the cold though and there ended up being a few I really enjoyed which is a big deal to me. I’ve never been a huge beer fan, and I’m always the one thinking to myself, ‘What are they talking about?’ when people start talking about all the flavors they tasted. But back to my point: the beers I actually liked! First one I tried was a Lambic by Lake Effect Brewing Company– of course I loved this one because it is a fruit style beer.
The second one I tried was actually my favorite and I tried it out of Lei’s glass before she had to go and get me my own {what a sweetheart!}- Forbidden Root by Forbidden Root is a beer that tastes like root beer! I couldn’t get over how good it tasted and this was probably my favorite of the night! My third beer was McLaughlin’s RedEye by Slapshot Brewing Co.-this one is surprising because it is a coffee porter and I’m not usually a huge fan of coffee, but it was so smooth and tasty I really enjoyed it. All of these beers were located in the first couple stalls. The rest of the night I was comparing everything to these three and hoping I could find a fourth I loved, but I never did. Instead we found a donut stand in the way back of the festivities and I feel in love there instead. Dinky Donuts was my true love of the night {and apparently Lei’s too!}.
They warmed my hands and my belly…what’s not to love? I thought their set up was unique too. Once the donuts are all fried up, they drop them in a paper bag and then ask you what flavor you want. Then they toss in a sugar topping in the bag and shake it all up. Delicious!
We used Uber for our transportation there and back. It worked out really well for us. No one had to be a DD and it was much more convenient than the Metra, walking, and El ride we would have had to do instead. If you haven’t tried them yet, I think you should. You login to the app, put in your destination and choose which kind of car you’d like. It will tell you when it’s found a driver who can come get you and shows you their picture, license plate number, and car make and model. My favorite part is that you do not need to exchange any money in the car. It’s all done through the app and your credit card. All in all it was a fantastic night and we can’t wait for next year!
